1.Physiology
Accredited to award master’s and doctoral degrees. There are now 3 professors (Two of them are doctoral tutors) and 8 associate professors. All of the young master tutors have doctorates and the experience which they gained when they studied abroad or worked abroad. Our main research topics are “Regulation of Plant Growth and Development”; “Physiological Responses of Plants to Anti-environment”; “Environmental Physiology”;” Ecophysiology”; “Nutritional Physiology”; “Crop Physiology”; “Plant Photosynthesis and Metabolism”; “Cell and Tissue Culture Technology and Application“ and so on. Instruments have been fully linked to modern molecular biotechnology and modern genetic breeding techniques. Now there are plans from “National 863 Project”,” National Science Foundation”, “Ministry of Education of the award for young teachers”, and there are more than 15 subjects from Hubei province and Wuhan city. We award graduate students Master of Science after they graduate. These graduates are well competent to the various positions including administration, teaching and research in colleges and universities, research institutes, government bodies and biological industry enterprises at home and abroad. Eighty percent of the master were admitted to the doctoral after graduation.

2.Microbiology
It was approved to be one of China’s first Doctor’s degree authorization centers in 1981; In 1989, It was approved by former State Education Commission to be the state key discipline; It passed the preliminary review of National "211 project" key discipline construction department in 1997; It was approved by Ministry of Education to make the establishment of the Cheung Kong Scholar Chair Professor’s post and approved to be the state key discipline again in 2002.Since 1990, the national and relevant departments depending on the specialties of this subject established the institution such as “State Key Laboratory of Agricultural Microbiology”; “The ministry of agriculture agricultural institute of microbiology”,” The ministry of agriculture microbial product quality supervision”; “inspection and testing center” and “National Engineering Research Center of Microbial Pesticides” one after another. There are now 11 professors (nine of them are doctoral tutors) and one Cheung Kong Scholar Chair Professor. The main research directions are “Insecticidal Microbiology”; “Nitrogen-fixing Microbiology”; “Streptomyces and Antibiotics Microbiology”; “Genomics and functional genomics of Cyanobacteria”;” Interaction between Plants and Microorganism” and so on. These graduates are well competent to the various positions including administration, teaching and research in colleges and universities, research institutes, government bodies and biological industry enterprises at home and abroad.

3.Developmental Biology

Our main research topics are “The Detailed Process and Mechanism of Higher Animals and Higher Plants” Growth”; “Morphogenesis”; “Organ Development”; “Identification”; “Isolation”; “Cloning and Genetic Transformation of Development-related Genes and Regulatory Sequences”; “Manual Operation of the Expression of Specific Gene of Tissues and Organs”; “Protoplast Culture and Operation” and the like. Now there are some vital projects from “National 863 Project”, “National Research Project for Genetically Modified (GM) Crops”, “National Science Foundation”, ”China-EU Development Co-operation Program” and so on. These graduates are well competent to the various positions including administration, teaching and research in colleges and universities, research institutes, government bodies and biological industry enterprises at home and abroad.

4.Ecology
Accredited to award master’s and doctoral degrees. There are now 10 professor s(Nine of them are doctoral tutors) and 15 associate professors. Our main research topics are “Molecular Ecology“; “Evolutionary Ecology”; “Phytoecology”; “Plant Physiological Ecology”; “Insect Ecology”; “Agriculture Ecology”; “Landscape Ecology”; “Restoration Ecology”; “Soil Ecology”; “Ecological Engineering and Aquatic Ecology“. We got distinguished achievement in the theory and practice of ecological agriculture and distinctive features. In the past five years, this subject has undertaken more than 30 projects from “national technological program”, ”Climbing Program of China”, “NSFC”,” IFS”, “The provincial ministries” technological program” and “ ’Climbing’ Program of Hubei province”. The cost of scientific research is more than 300 ten thousand yuan. We published over 300 papers in different academic journals, domestic and abroad and most of our achievements won Prize for Progress in Science and Technology of nation, province and city. These graduates are well competent to the various positions including administration, teaching and research in colleges and universities, research institutes, government bodies and biological industry enterprises at home and abroad.

5.Crop cultivation and farming system
We are the doctor’s degree authorization centers of first-grade state subject Crop Science and also the first master’s degree authorization center. There are now 6 professors and 9 associate professors,6 of them own doctor’s degrees. A number of teachers have been to the United States, the Netherlands, Japan, Britain and other countries to engage in the cooperative research one after another. Our main research topics are “High-yield, High-quality and High-efficiency Crop Cultivation Physiological Basis”; “High-yield, High-quality and High-efficiency Sustainable Development of Farming System”; “Crop Growth and Chemical Control; Computer Simulated of Crop Growth”; “Crop Ecosystem Management” and so on. In the past ten years, this subject has undertaken more than 100 projects from “National 863 Project”, “National 973 Project”, “National 948 Project” ,”national technological program”, “ ‘Climbing’ Program of China”, “NSFC” and some provincial subjects. We published over 300 papers in different academic journals, domestic and abroad and published over 30 monographs. Most of our achievements won Prize for Progress in Science and Technology of nation and province. 6.Crop genetics and breeding
We are the branch of doctor’s degree authorization centers of first-grade state subject Crop Science and the first batch of the state key discipline and retained professional post discipline. Depending on this subject, we built center for post-doctoral studies. There are now 17 professors (1 senior academician and 1 distinguished professor) and 9 associate professors, 25 of them own doctor’s degrees. A number of teachers have been to The United States, Germany, Canada, Sweden, Japan, the Philippines and other countries to engage in the cooperative research one after another. Depending on this subject, we also built “National Key Laboratory of Crop Genetic Improvement, Huazhong Agricultural University ”, “National Center of Crop Molecular Breeding”, “The Wuhan Research Branch of the National Rapeseed Genetic Improvement Center”, “National Plant Gene Research Center” and the like. Our main research topics are “crop heterosis and application research”,” the Innovation and the use of germplasm resource research”, “the principle and methods of crop breeding”, “cell and chromosome engineering research”, “molecular genetics and Biological technology research”. In the past ten years, this subject has undertaken more than 200 projects from “National 863 Project”, “National 973 Project”, “National 948 Project” ,”national technological program”, “ ‘Climbing’ Program of China”, “NSFC” and some provincial subjects Most of our achievements won Prize for Progress in Science and Technology of nation and province. More than 20 varieties were bred and total areas of promotion are more than hundreds of millions of acres.
